Background: Competitors from 18 nations took part in the athletics match held at Rome's giant Stadio Olympico, October 10.

The high jump was won at 6ft. 9 1/2 in. by Pettersson, Sweden, who later failed in his attempt to clear the bar at just under 7ft. and thus beat the Swedish national record. Fair brother, Britain, jumped 6ft. 8 5/8 in., achieving the greatest height cleared by a British high jumper and defeating the European Champion, Dahl, of Sweden.

Winner in the 100 Meters Hurdles was Lorger, Yugoslavia, in 14.2 secs. and Delecour, France, won the 100 Metres, in 10.4 secs.

In the 1500 Metres, Roszavolgyi, Hungary, after some hard struggling for the lead on the last lap, forged ahead to win in 5 mins.44.7 secs.
