  • Description

THE FIRST 52 MILES OF A PROPOSED 132-MILE HIGHWAY, KNOWN AS THE BANGKOK BYPASS ROAD, WAS OPENED BY THAILAND'S PRIME MINISTER, FIELD MARSHAL THANOM KITTIKACHORN, ON FRIDAY. THE HIGHWAY IS BEING BUILT BY ENGINEERS OF THE THAI AND UNITED STATES ARMIES.

AMONG THOSE PRESENT AT THE OPENING WERE THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR MR GRAHAM MARTIN, MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS AND THAI GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS. TO COMMEMORATE THE OCCASION, A PLAQUE WAS UNVEILED BY FIELD MARSHAL THANOM KITTIKACHORN. HE AND MR MARTIN WERE THE FIRST TO DRIVE ON THE NEW HIGHWAY TO KABINBURI TO REVIEW BOTH THE AMERICAN 809TH ENGINEER BATTALION AND THAI ARMY ENGINEERS WHO CONSTRUCTED IT.

IN HIS SPEECH, THE PRIME MINISTER SAID THE BUILDING OF THE HIGHWAY WAS TO ENSURE THE SECURITY, COLLECTIVE DEFENCE AND CONTINUING PROGRESS OF THAILAND. A PLAQUE, DEDICATED TO THE ENGINEERS, WAS ALSO UNVEILED BY THE THAI PRIME MINISTER. THE PRESS OF A BUTTON RELEASED COLOURED BALLOONS ATTACHED TO THE PLAQUE.

THE HIGHWAY STARTS FROM CHACHOENGSAO, SOUTHEAST OF BANGKOK, AND LINKS KABINBURI TO PANASNIKOM. THE ADDITIONAL 82-MILE ROAD WILL EVENTUALLY LINK THE THREE PROVINCES TO KORAT. THE PROJECT HAS OPENED UP SOME 250,000 ACRES OF LAND FOR CULTIVATION AND THE AREA'S POPULATION HAS INCREASED BY 60 PER CENT AS A RESULT.

THE DECISION TO BUILD THE ROAD WAS TAKEN FOLLOWING THE DISTURBANCES IN LAOS IN 1962, WHICH THEN POSED A GRAVE THREAT TO THAILAND. ON COMPLETION, THE PROJECT WILL LINK THE GULF OF THAILAND WITH KORAT, THE GATEWAY TO NORTH EASTERN THAILAND, THUS RELIEVING SHIP TRAFFIC FROM THE PORT OF BANGKOK.

THE HIGHWAY HAS AN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACE DESIGNED FOR VEHICLE SPEEDS OF UP TO 82 MILES PER HOUR.
