GAY TRIP, RIDDEN BY VETERAN IRISH JOCKEY PAT TAAFEE, RACED TO A WIN BY TWENTY LENGTHS IN THE PREMIER EVENT OF THE BRITISH RACING CALENDAR AT AINTREE, LIVERPOOL, TODAY (SATURDAY 4TH APRIL.)
A FIELD OF 28 HORSES FACED THE STARTER AT AINTREE AS THE GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE GOT UNDER WAY.

ONLY SEVEN OF THE 28 RUNNERS WERE TO FINISH THE COURSE. SEVERAL JUMPS, INCLUDING "BEECHERS BROOK", TOOK A HEAVY TOLL OF HORSES AND RIDERS, AND ONE MOUNT "RACOON" WAS KILLED AT THE THIRD FENCE, HALF WAY THROUGH THE RACE. THE GRAND NATIONAL, WORTH NEARLY 15-THOUSAND POUNDS, IS RUN OVER A DISTANCE OF FOUR AND A HALF MILES, WITH THIRTY FENCES TO CLEAR ON THE WAY TO THE POST.

GAY TRIP HAD THE RACE WON AS HE ENTERED THE HOME STRAIGHT AND CLEARED OUT FROM THOSE LEFT IN THE FIELD.

IT WAS 40-YEAR-OLD PAT TAAFEE'S SECOND WINNING RIDE IN A GRAND NATIONAL. GAY TRIP IS OWNED BY MR. TONY CHAMBERS AND TRAINED BY FRED RIMELL.
