    DISCUSSIONS AND MEETINGS HAVE BEGUN AMONG LEADERS OF THE CONGRESS PARTY IN NEW DELHI TO SELECT A SUCCESSOR FOR PRIME MINISTER NEHRU, WHO DIED WEDNESDAY.

    THE BODY OF THE INDIAN LEADER WAS CREMATED ON THURSDAY ON THE BANKS OF THE JUMNA RIVER. ON FRIDAY THE QUEUE OF PEOPLE WAITING TO PAY HOMAGE AT THE SITE OF THE PYRE STRETCHED NEARLY TWO MILES. THE SPOT, CALLED "SAMADHI", HAS BEEN COVERED WITH FLOWERS BY MANY OF THE PEOPLE FILING SLOWLY PAST.

    DURING THE DAY, A MEETING WAS HELD AS A CEREMONY OF HOMAGE TO THE MEMORY OF MR. NEHRU. AMONG THE FOREIGN REPRESENTATIVES PRESENT WERE MRS BANDARANAIKE, PRIME MINISTER OF CEYLON; MR. DEAN RUSK, U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE; AND MR. KOSYGIN THE SOVIET DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, AMONG THE INDIAN POLITICIANS ATTENDING THE MEETING WAS MR. SHASTRI, ONE OF THE MEN CONSIDERED A POSSIBLE SUCCESSOR TO MR. NEHRU.

    THE CROWD, ESTIMATED AT NEARLY HALF A MILLION, WAS ADDRESSED BY PRESIDENT RADHAKRISHNAN. HE EXPRESSED THE GRATITUDE OF THE INDIAN PEOPLE TO THE REPRESENTATIVES FROM OVERSEAS WHO HAD ATTENDED THE FUNERAL. THEIR SYMPATHY, HE SAID, HAD BROUGHT COMFORT IN "THIS TRAGIC HOUR OF OUR HISTORY".
