  • Description

RIOT POLICE WERE OUT AGAIN TODAY (THURSDAY) IN SEOUL, CAPITAL OF SOUTH KOREA, AS DEMONSTRATING STUDENTS RAMPAGED THROUGH THE STREETS FOR THE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE DAY. ON TUESDAY 429 STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED AS 3,000 DEMONSTRATORS CLASHED WITH POLICE.

THE DEMONSTRATIONS STARTED AS A PROTEST AGAINST THE ALLEGED RIGGING OF THE RESULT OF LAST THURSDAY'S ELECTIONS TO THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY. THE MAJOR OPPOSITION SHINMIN (NEW DEMOCRATIC) PARTY HAS DENOUNCED THE ELECTIONS AS "A COUP D'ETAT UNDER THE GUISE OF VOTING".

THE NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAS THREATENED TO BOYCOTT THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY IF ITS DEMAND FOR NEW ELECTIONS IS NOT MET. IT IS CALLING A MEETING OF ITS 'STRUGGLE COMMITTEE" TO TRY TO HAVE THE ELECTION RESULT NULLIFIED.

ON TUESDAY MORE THAN 3,000 STUDENTS FROM SEVEN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES PELTED POLICE WITH ROCKS AND STONES IN NOISY STREET DEMONSTRATIONS. POLICE RETALIATED BY USING CLUBS AND TEAR GAS IN EFFORTS TO SUBDUE THE RIOTS.

MANY OF THE STUDENTS WERE INJURED AS THE 500 STEEL-HELMETED RIOT POLICE MOVED IN TO DISPERSE THEM. ARMY LORRIES WERE RUSHED IN TOT HE RIOT AREAS TO TAKE AWAY THE ARRESTED STUDENTS.

PRESIDENT CHUNG HEE PARK'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICAN PARTY, WHICH WON 130 OF THE 175 NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SEATS, HAS REJECTED THE DEMAND FOR ANOTHER POLL. A NEW MOVE WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY (THURSDAY) BY THE OPPOSITION PARTY. THEY HAVE DECIDED TO START A NATIONWIDE PROTEST CAMPAIGN, STARTING WITH A MASS RALLY IN SEOUL ON SUNDAY NEXT.
