Since Rhodesia closed its border, resulting in supplies of South African meat being cut off from Zambia, Kenya has entered into a GBP1,000,000 (2 million 400,000 U.S. dollars) a year contract to supply Zambia with fresh meat.
The Kenya Meat Commission factory at Athi River, near Nairobi, is where cattle are cleaned, slaughtered and butchered in an ultra-hygienic manner. A conveyor belt keeps up the flow of newly slaughtered beef while fast working butchers cut and grade it, ready for packaging.
From the production line the meat is loaded into cases, then porters ferry it to waiting refrigerated trucks.
The Zambian contract, which includes a weekly supply of 60 tons of fresh meat, follows another recent deal with Switzerland. This Swiss will be the first Europeans to import Kenyan beef.

Now, following the closure of the Rhodesian border, Kenya will be supplying Zambia with GBP1,000,000 worth of fresh meat every year. Zambia formerly imported meat from South Africa. Under this new contract she will receive 60 tons of fresh meat, and 15 tons of offal every week. The contract will run for three years and has an additional provision for the monthly supply of 3,000 cases of corned beef.

The Zambian contract isn't the sole cause of the rise in demand for Kenyan meat. Under a recent agreement Kenya will supply Switzerland with substantial amounts of beef, thus making the Swiss the first Europeans to import Kenyan meat. With the current world meat shortage, Kenya believes that more orders will be coming in.
