Background: On the fifth anniversary of the killing of three Dominican sisters by Trujillo henchmen, a parade in their honour turned into an anti-American demonstration sponsored by Communist groups. Then Brazilian troops of the O.A.S. broke it up with tear gas.

The three girls who were murdered on November 25, 1960 were married to men who were members of the 14th of June movement, a Pro-Castro group. The girls' husbands had been put in prison in the town of Puerto Plata by Dominican Dictator Rafael Trujillo. The sisters were on their way home after visiting their husbands in prison when Trujillo killers stopped their car, beat the girls and the chauffeur to death, then put the bodies back in the car and pushed it over a cliff to simulate an accident.

On November 25, 1965 the 14th of June group sponsored a parade and demonstration against the United States in the Park of Independence. Wreaths were placed on the Altar de la Patria, the Altar of the Fatherland, and Emma Tavares, the sister of the founder of the 14th of June movement who was killed in 1963 by government troops, spoke to the marchers.

When the demonstrations seemed to be getting out of hand, Brazilian troops of the Organisation of American States peace force fired tear gas and the marchers fled the scene.
