  • Description

Australia's Ron Clarke -- the world's record holder in the two mile run -- won the two mile race in the Los Angeles Times Indoors Games Saturday night (11 February). Though Clarke didn't break any records, it was a sweet victory for him, for last year Bill Baillie of New Zealand, who came in second, defeated him in the Los Angeles Indoors Games.

A crowd of more than 13,000 persons at the Los Angeles Arena cheered Clarke as he took the lead from Baillie with a quarter of a mile to go and then sprinted to far outside the New Zealander. The winning time was 8:41.8. Last year, Baillie's times was 8:37.4. Clarke attributed hi slow time to a recent attack of influenza. "I was further gone in my conditioning than I had realized, "he said after the race.

Canadian Dave Ellis of the Toronto Olympic Club placed third in the two mile race.
