Background: Ex-African bantamweight champion Sulley Shittu of Ghana had an unexpectedly difficult task subduing Togo's Abass Maccoley in an international fight in Takoradi, Ghana on Saturday (8 May).

Shittu won the eight round contest on points - his accurate straight lefts scored consistently - but he had to be wary to the last of Maccoley's wild but strong hooks.

Shittu hoped the bout would be a step on the road to recovering the African title which the African Boxing Union (ABU) took away from him for alleged inactivity.

Maccoley, aged 29, is an experienced performer and although Shittu put him down once briefly at the end of the fifth round, there was no question of him not lasting the distance. Maccoley fought as an amateur for 15 years before turning professional in 1974 , and his countrymen could be proud of the performance he produced against one of Africa's best boxers.
