Background: West Germany's involvement in the flight from Greece of Professor Mangakis, a political prisoner, threatened today to turn into a diplomatic confrontation between athens and Bonn.

The professor left for West Germany on a German military aircraft on Saturday only four hours after a court in Athens suspended his imprisonment on health grounds. Herr Peter Limburg, the West German Ambassador here, was reported to have seen him off at the American air-base near Athens. The professor was today in Bonn, where he has been offered a post at Heidelberg University.

In a public statement today the Greek Government called the professor's departure an "abduction" and promised to publish a full account of the affair once Bonn had replied to its protest. Herr Limburg was reported by ??? officials today to have suffered a "???ld heart attack due to exhaustion". He was stated to be resting at home. The Ambassador received an unprecedented diplomatic snub yesterday, when he was asked officially to absent himself from a Foreign Ministry dinner in honour of the diplomatic corps, in view of popular reactions to the Mangakis affair.

The Greek press suggested today that Herr Limburg might be declared persona non grata and asked to leave.

The Greek Air Force said today that the German aircraft did not require special permission to land at Athens in view of existing military agreements between the two countries. Notification that it was to land last Saturday for five hours on a "courier mission" had been received three days earlier.
