  • Description

Public life can be an unstable business. In August 1955, Giuseppe Maini was elected a member of the Greet Council of San Marino - the pocket republic that is situated within Italy.

In October, 1955, the Greet Council installed him as a Captain-General of the Republic - a post that he held until the end of his office in April, 1956.

This follows the dictates of the Constitution which rules that a Captain-General may not hold office for more than six months - a decision that many have disagreed with on the grounds that it does not allow the elected leaders enough time in which to study the interests of the community.

Although the Great Council is elected to a term of four years, Giuseppe Maini lost his mandate when the Socialist - Communist majority was defated last year and the Catholic Party took over control.

But Giuseppe, who was born in 1924, has not given up his plans for a career in the political field. Working as a miner in shaft 14 of the Charbonnage du Levant et des Produits de Flenu, Belgium, he devotes his spare time to preparing his canditure for the San Marino elections in 1959.

If his party nominates him again, Giuseppe hopes to once again became a member of the Great Council, and, who knows, he may be installed as a Captain-General again.

One-time vinyard worker, Giuseppe became interested in politics when he attended part-time classes run by the local Communist Party.
