  • Description

A CANBERRA PLANE OF NO. 75 SQUADRON OF THE ROYAL NEW ZEALAND AIR FORCE, ON A TRAINING FLIGHT FROM TENGAH IN SINGAPORE, CRASHED INTO THE SOUTHERN MALAYAN JUNGLE ON THE NIGHT OF OCT 26.

TWENTY-THREE RAF, RNZAF AND RAAF PLANES, AND ARMY MEN, IMMEDIATELY BEGAN COMBING THE JUNGLES. THREE DAYS LATER ON OCT 29, A RNZAF PLANE SPOTTED A PARACHUTE IN THE JUNGLES 12 MILES NORTH OF GEMAS, IN SOUTHERN MALAYA.

THE RAF JUNGLE RESCUE TEAM THEN MOVED IN HELICOPTERS AND FOUND AN EMPTY PARACHUTE HARNESS. NEXT DAY, THE PILOT OF THE CANBERRA, FL. LT. PETER BEVAN, WALKED OUT OF THE JUNGLE WITH SORES AND SPRAINED WRIST. HE WAS HELPED OUT BY A CHINESE LOGGER.

WHEN WE HIT THE JUNGLE IN PITCH DARKNESS HE WAS CAUGHT 70 FEET UP IN TREES BY HIS PARACHUTE. HE CUT HIS PARACHUTE AND WAS CAUGHT AGAIN 20 FEET UP IN BRANCHES BY HIS LIFE JACKET. LATER HE DROPPED TO THE GROUND.

THE OTHER OCCUPANT OF THE PLANE, THE NAVIGATOR - FLYING OFFICER FINN - WAS STILL MISSING AND ANOTHER RESCUE OPERATION WAS ON FOOT. ON NOV 1 THE WRECKAGE OF THE PLANE AND THE BODY OF THE NAVIGATOR WERE FOUND. THE BODY WAS BURIED WHERE IT WAS FOUND.
