  • Description

A trade delegation from Zaire is in the Soviet Union's capital, Moscow, for "break-through" talks on further development of trade and economic relations between the two countries.

SYNOPSIS: Soviet foreign trade minister, Mr. Nikolai Patolitchev, headed a welcoming party when Zaire's commissioner for commerce, Mr. Duga Kugbetoro, and his entourage arrived for discussions on Wednesday (8 December). The visit will last for ten days.

But as already officially announced, Zaire and the Soviet Union will sign, on Friday (10 December) a trade agreement, the first of its kind between the two countries. It appears to mark a considerable improvement in their bilateral relations. They came to breaking point last year when Zaire and the Soviet Union were backing different sides in the Angolan civil war.

This seems to be forgotten now. Zaire's state commissioner said he's ready for a detailed discussion of cooperation plans. And Tass News Agency declared that the two countries intent to develop their trade and economic relations.
