Background: The presence of the Argentine national and former Tottenham Hotspur star, Osvaldo Ardiles, failed to save the French side Paris ST. Germain from a decisive 3-0 defeat by the Brazilian team Atletico Mineiro on August 3. Ardiles had joined the club with the Yugoslav Safet Susic, and prepared to help his side host a four-club tournament on the home ground. But Atletico Mineiro proved too strong. Their first goal came from strong team work that enabled Heleno to score from close range. The next goal came from a strong individual attack by Brazilian international Eder, who beat the French defence with an angled shot. Then, Reinaldo beat two Paris defenders to score the third goals from the edge of the penalty area. The game was part of a tournament that also included Cologne and Dynamo Zagreb.
