  • Description

Tanzanian President, Julius Nyerere, has sent one of his top economic advisers to India to finalise long term economic and financial agreements. Professor F.J. Rweyemamu and his Tanzanian delegation arrived in New Delhi on Friday (4 June).

SYNOPSIS: Talks were held at the Indian Ministry of Commerce on Monday (7 June) where the Minister, Mr. D.P. Chattopadhyaya greeted the Tanzanian professor and other members of the visiting group. The discussions centred on the decisions taken at the first meeting of the Indo-Tanzanian Joint Economic Commission held in New Delhi in January this year. The Commission was formed during a visit to India, one year earlier, by the Tanzanian Prime Minister, Rashidi Kawawa. The two countries have been strong trading partners for some years with Tanzania's exports to India reaching 151 million Tanzanian shillings, two year ago. Tanzania hopes to improve on this and is believed to be very interested in buying Indian technical equipment.

The visiting delegation will also be having talks at the Ministries of Agriculture, Industry and Finance, reflecting the wide range of the agreements that the two countries are hoping to finalise.
