Background: INTRODUCTION: Athletics - American Steve Riddick won two sprints and Kenya's Mike Boit took the thousand metres in the 18th Annual Sunkist Indoor Invitation meeting in Los Angeles, in the U.S.A. In the high jump, world record holder Dwight Stones was beaten by fellow American Rory Kotinek.

SYNOPSIS: The thousand metres -- and Mike Boit leading from the start. He won the race in two minutes 8.6 seconds, but didn't approach the arena record of two minutes six set in 1960 by New Zealand star, Peter Snell, who was the starter for the race. In last year's Montreal Olympics Boit was forced out of competitions when Kenya joined a boycott by several black African countries in protest against New Zealand's sporting links with South Africa.

High jump, and Dwight Stones, holder of the world record, was defeated - losing to fellow American Rory Kotinek, as both cleared 7-2.

    The women's one thousand metres.

Francie Lutz managed to squeeze past Cyndy Poor at the tape in two minutes 42.0 seconds - point one of a second ahead.

The 50-yard dash -- and American Steve Riddick won in 5.3 seconds. Half an hour later, Riddick won again, this time at 60 yards, defeating Olympic Gold medallist Don Quarrie of Jamaica and Hasely Crawford of Trinidad, winner of the Olympic 100 metres.
