  • Description

WORK HAS JUST STARTED ON LEVELLING THE MAIN RUNWAY FOR THE NEW PARIS NORD AIRPORT, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BECOME OPERATIONAL BY 1973. WITH ORLY AND LE BOURGET AIRFIELDS IN ACTION, THE NEW AIRPORT WILL SPECIALISE IN COPING WITH THE INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS OF CONCORDES, AIR BUSES, AND THE LARGE-CAPACITY AIRCRAFT OF THE COMING YEARS.

DESPITE RECENT INDUSTRIAL TROUBLES, WORK ON PARIS NORD IS WELL IN HAND, AND THE PREPARATORY LEVELLING OF NO 1 RUNWAY IS THE LATEST STAGE OF OPERATIONS THAT HAVE ALREADY INCLUDED DIGGING OUT THE SITE OF THE PASSENGER TERMINAL, BUILDING FOUR BRIDGES FOR RUNWAYS OVER THE NEARBY AL NORTHERN MOTORWAY, AND CONSTRUCTING OFFICES AND THE FIRST SERVICE BUILDINGS.

THE ESTIMATED COST OF GBP70,000,000 STERLING IS CERTAIN TO BE DOUBLED IF NOT QUADRUPLED BY THE TIME THE WHOLE COMPLEX IS FINISHED SOME TIME IN THE NEXT 15 YEARS. WHEN THE AIRPORT WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT IT WOULD HANDLE 7,000,000 PASSENGERS ANNUALLY, BUT NOW IT IS BELIEVED THAT IT WILL BE CAPABLE OF DEALING WITH MORE THAN 30,000,000.

THE SITE OF THE AIRPORT IS AT ROISSY-EN-FRANCE, SEVEN MILES NORTH OF LE BOURGET. IT COVERS MORE THAN 6,000 ACRES OF FARMLAND.

ONLY ONE FARM, WHICH IS IN THE MIDDLE OF WHAT WILL BE NO 2 RUNWAY, IS DUE FOR DEMOLITION, AND THE VILLAGE OF ROISSY ITSELF WILL REMAIN INTACT -- SANDWICHED BETWEEN TWO OF THE RUNWAYS.
