  • Description

President Georges Pompidou of France and Chancellor Willy Brandt of West Germany met on Monday (3 July) in Bonn to begin a two-day biannual summit meeting. The talks between the two leaders are seen as crucial to the fate of the planned 10-nation meeting of an enlarged Common Market in Paris later this year, and began in the wake of upsets on international money markets caused by the floating of the British pound, and West Germany's surprise decision to introduce foreign exchange controls to protect the Mark from another avalanche of dollars. Newsmen were told that the talks were proceeding faster than expected and that because of early agreement on certain unspecified points, it would probably be possible to announce results at the end of the Summit. The two leaders are also discussing political co-operation between East and West.
