Background: For the first time in ten years, a Czech rider has won the "Golden Helmet of Czechoslovakia" speedway competition. This year's running of the Golden Helmet competition at Pardubice on Sunday (23 September) attracted some of the best-known names in speedway competition. Ex-world champion Ivan Mauger and Ole Olsen, three-time winner of the Golden Helmet, led the field of contenders.

The Golden Helmet race is run under the same rules as normal international speedway competition, except that six riders compete in each heat, instead of four, and the final race is over six laps, instead of five.

The winner of this 25th running of the "Golden Helmet of Czechoslavakia" was Milan Spinka, with Ole Olsen second, and Ivan Mauger third.

SYNOPSIS: The "Golden Helmet of Czechoslovakia" is the prize -- and name -- of the race run at Pardubice each year. Ivan Mauger, ex-world champion, and Barry Brigge were among the international speedway competitors who took part in opening ceremony on Sunday.

The Golden Helmet race is run under international speedway rules, except that six men compete in each heat, instead of four.

Competition is keen, and the riders' determination is evident.

Through all the early heats Czech rider Milan Spinka continued to hold off the opposition. In the final race it was Spinka who set the pace.

In the last of the six laps Spinka led.

Spinka came in first, followed by Ole Olsen and Ivan Mauger. He won the Golden Helmet, and for the first time in ten years brought victory to Czechoslovakia.
