THREE AMERICAN TEAMS BROUGHT A SURPRISE FINISH TO THE DAYTONA 24-HOUR MOTOR RACE, WHICH ENDED ON SUNDAY, BY THRASHING STRONG TEAMS OF GERMAN PORSCHES AND FORD GT CARS AND TAKING THE FIRST THREE PLACES:
THE WINNING CAR WAS DRIVEN BY 44-YEAR-OLD CHUCK PARSONS.

HIS LOLA-CHERROLET HAD SPENT AND HOUR IN THE PITS DURING SATURDAY-SUNDAY NIGHT FOR REPAIRS AND FINISHED THE RACE WITH THE EXHAUST HELD ON WITH TAPE. NEVERTHELESS, PARSONS AND HIS CO-DRIVER MARK DONAHUE, COAXED THE CAR HOME, COVERING 2,385 MILES (3,840 KMS) ON 626 LAPS, FOR AN AVERAGE SPEED OF SLIGHTLY UNDER 100 MILES AN HOUR (160 KMS)
SECOND WAS ANOTHER LOLA, DRIVEN BY LOTHER MOTSCHENBACHER AND ED LESLIE. THIRD, ANOTHER AMERICAN TEAM - A PONTIAC FIREBIRD DRIVEN BY JON WARD AND JERRY TITUS.

BEHIND THEM THEY LEFT THE WRECKAGE OF FIVE POWERFUL PORSCHES, WHICH HAD TAKEN FIRST THREE PLACES IN LAST YEAR'S DAYTONA EVENT. THIS TIME EVERY ONE OF THE GERMAN CARS WAS FORCED TO RETIRE.

THE PRINCIPAL CHALLENGE TO THE PORCHES WAS THOUGHT TO BE THE ENGLISH FORD GT-40'S, BUT THEY TOO SUCCUMBED TO MECHANICAL FAILURE.
