  • Description

President Eisenhower looked fit and well when he faced a barrage of questions covering a wide range of subjects at his recent press conference.

But, despite his obvious health, the President paid considerable attention to questions regarding the role of vice-President Nixon in the event of a sudden illness to himself.

Surrounded by some of the top political correspondents in the United States, President Eisenhower disclosed that the possibility of Mr. Nixon taking over the role of chief executive had been discussed and full agreement reached.

Other subjects touched on the President included the proposed summit talks, unemployment in the United States, external and internal trade topics, and a variety of current topics.

Sitting at the President's side throughout was White House Press Secretary, James Haggarty, who collapsed with stomach illness soon afterwards.
