    Despite strong campaigning by the various parties, only an estimated 20 per cent of Colombia's 10 million registered voters went to the polls in the country's mid-term elections on Sunday (18 April).

    At stake at the polls, which fall in the middle of Presidential elections, were about 8,500 municipal posts and 406 legislative provincial seats.

    Results are not expected for a few days, but initial counting in the capital of Bogota indicated support for the administration of Liberal President Alfonso Lopez Michelsen.

    The Liberals are being challenged by candidates of the Conservative Party, the National Popular Alliance (ANAPO) and a leftwing alliance led by the Communist Party.

    Campaigning in Bogota reached a climax on Sunday with party supporters stopping people in the streets and urging them to vote. However, voters displayed widespread apathy.

    However, the country's registered 10 million voters displayed widespread apathy. Only an estimated 20 per cent of them turned out to vote, despite the heavy campaigning.

    Thousands of people walked amongst the polling booths in Bogota, but a great percentage of them didn't even bother to cast a vote. The elections fall between the middle of Presidential elections. Results aren't expected for a few days, but initial returns indicate solid support for the Liberal administration of President Alfonso Lopez Michelsen. The Liberals are being challenged by candidates of the Conservative Party, the National Popular Alliance and a left wing alliance led by the Communist Party.
