  • Description

THE BIENNALE ART FESTIVAL OPENED IN VENICE TODAY (SATURDAY) AND CLOSED WITHIN HOURS BECAUSE OFFICIALS FEARED VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST SO-CALLED "BOURGEOIS ART."
POLICE CLEARED THE SPRAWLING FESTIVAL GROUNDS AFTER THE OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY AND CLOSED THE GATES TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL TOMORROW (SUNDAY). A GROUP OF ABOUT 20 ARTISTS AND "INTELLECTUALS" DISRUPTED THE OPENING OF THE FESTIVAL BY CHANTING SLOGANS IN FRONT OF THE AMERICAN AND SOVIET PAVILIONS.

TROUBLE WAS ANTICIPATED AFTER STUDENTS LAUNCHED A VIOLENT PROTEST AGAINST SOME OF THE EXHIBITS DURING THE BIENNALE'S THREE-DAY PRESS REVIEW EARLIER THIS WEEK.

ALREADY 20 ARTISTS HAVE WITHDRAWN THEIR PAINTINGS AND SUBSTITUTED SLOGANS SAYING "DOWN WITH POLICE" AND "VIOLENCE KILLS CULTURE". THEIR MOVE FOLLOWED CLASHES BETWEEN STUDENTS AND POLICE IN ST. MARK'S SQUARE.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE 73 YEAR-OLD HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL PRIZES FOR THE PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURES WERE NOT AWARDED ON THE FIRST DAY. OFFICIALS SAID THIS WAS BECAUSE THEY HAS NOT YET SET UP A JURY, BUT ADDED THE PRIZES WOULD EVENTUALLY BE GIVEN.
