  • Description

HONG KONG IS FESTOONED WITH STREET DECORATIONS AND BRIGHT LIGHTS AS CHINESE CELEBRATE THE ANCIENT MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL. LIKE NEW YEAR, THE MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL IS A FESTIVAL OF THE LIVING AND IS GAY IN CHARACTER.

A TRADITIONAL FEATURE OF THE FESTIVAL IS THE "MOON CAKE". AN ALTAR IS BUILT OUT OF DOORS AND THE "MOON CAKES" ARE OFFERED TO "THE OLD MAN IN THE MOON".

DESPITE THE FACT THAT MAN HAS NOW LANDED ON THE MOON, THE CAKE SHOPS HAVE BEEN DOING ROARING TRADE IN THE SPECIAL "MOON-CAKES".

THE STREETS OF KOWLOON ARE EVEN MORE BRIGHTLY-LIT THAN USUAL AS THE CHINESE CELEBRATE THEIR FESTIVAL. MID-AUTUMN IS ESSENTIALLY A FAMILY AFFAIR IN WHICH WOMEN PLAY A PROMINENT ROLE.
