Background: An air link between the Soviet Union and the socialist Republic of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean has now been opened. A Tupolev 154-B of the Russian airline Aeroflot landed at Madagascar last week (13 July) to inaugurate the service.

SYNOPSIS: The Soviet plane came in to a big reception at Madagascar's Antananarivo-Ivato airport near the capital. The new air service is the result of an agreement signed in March between the government of Madagascar and the Soviet Union. According to the agreement, the Russian airline will have the concession on flights between the two capitals. There will now be regular two-way flights between Moscow and Antananarivo once a week. The journey's a long one, taking nearly 15 hours -- but includes stops in Mogadishu, Cairo and Aden.

The Soviet Ambassador in Madagascar, Alexander Alexeev, other officials from the Soviet Embassy, and members of Madagascar's Supreme Revolutionary Council, were among the welcoming party. The Russian pilot was greeted by Mr. Alexeev when he stepped from the plane. Aeroflot is the first airline from a Communist country to establish a regular link with Madagascar.
