    FALMOUTH HARBOUR, IN CORNWALL, TOOK ON A SEAFARING ASPECT OF A CENTURY AGO THIS WEEK AS THE GRACEFUL "TALL SHIPS" -- SCHOONERS AND WINDJAMMERS -- SAILED MAJESTICALLY IN TO PREPARE FOR THE START OF TOMORROW'S RACE TO DENMARK.

    THIS YEARS'S RACE HAS ATTRACTED 28 ENTRIES, INCLUDING SHIPS FROM NORWAY, SWEDEN, THE NETHERLANDS, FRANCE AND GREAT BRITAIN. THE RACE IS DIVIDE INTO THREE CLASSES, AND THE CREWS, WHICH ARE PREDOMINANTLY COMPOSED OF CADETS, TOTAL 842.

    CROWN PRINCE CARL-GUSTAV OF SWEDEN, WHO IS 20, IS A MEMBER OF THE CREW OF THE 220 TON, FORE-AND-AFT RIGGED "FALKEN", OF THE ROYAL SWEDISH NAVY. HE WAS ORIGINALLY EXPECTED TO ARRIVE IN THE "FALKEN'S SISTER SHIP -- "GLADAN."
    BRITAIN'S MAIN HOPE IN THE RACE IS THE 300 TONE "SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL" -- THE SAIL TRAINING ASSOCIATION'S YOUTH ADVENTURE SCHOONER. OTHER VESSELS WITH GOOD CHANCES ARE THE FAMOUS NORWEGIAN VESSEL, THE "CHRISTIAN RADICH", WINNER OF CLASS ONE IN THE RACE TWO YEARS AGO FROM LISBON TO BERMUDA. THE 767 TON "CHRISTIAN RADICH" NO AN OSLO TRAINING SHIP, WAS RESTORED AT A COST OF GBP7,000 AFTER BEING SUNK WHILE GERMAN HANDS DURING WORLD WAR TWO. ALSO FROM NORWAY ARE TWO OTHER VESSELS IN CLASS ONE -- THE "DANMARK" AND THE "GEORGE STAGE". THE "DANMARK" CARRIES 15,565 SQUARE FEET OF SAIL. SOME IF THE VAST WINDJAMMERS HAD TO ANCHOR IN THE CARRICK ROADS THE HARBOUR BECAUSE OF THEIR SIZE. IN THE THIRD CLASS THE "WINSTON CHURCHILL" WILL RACE AGAINST TWO VESSELS FROM SWEDEN, ON FROM THE ROYAL NETHERLANDS NAVAL COLLEGE, AND SIX FROM BRITAIN. IN THE THIRD CLASS -- FOR LARGE OCEANS RACERS -- THERE WILL BE TEN BRITISH ENTRIES.
