  • Description

Left-wing guerrillas fighting Nicaragua's ruler Anastasio Somoza have been reported to be pushing forward on all fronts in preparation for a march on the capital Managua. Residents from several parts of the country also reported that Sandinist guerrilla reinforcements were moving towards major towns already seized. One of the towns captured from the government is the important centre of Masaya.

SYNOPSIS: The town of Masaya is only 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Managua. It shows the scars of the battle during which the guerrillas took the town from the government, but those now in control quickly organised a big clean-up. One 500-pound (226 kilogramme) bomb destroyed half a block and killed six people.

Claims from the government in Managua about National Guard successes in the south of the country raised fears among the guerrillas of a Government counter-attack, and they advised people to take cover.

Masaya is reportedly run efficiently, with most homes having bomb shelters.
