??? death during police detention of Black South African leader, Steve Biko has led to a storm of protests throughout the country -- and a public challenge concerning the Government's explanation of the incident. Mr. Donald Woods, the outspoken editor of the Daily Despatch newspaper and a personal friend of Mr. Biko, denies the official version that the black leader died during a hunger strike.
SYNOPSIS: It was alleged at a protest meeting in Capetown University on Thursday (15 September) that Mr. Biko was not an hunger strike, and did not die of natural causes. Mr. Biko, Honourary President of the Black people's Convention, had been in detention for nearly a month facing charges of drafting and distributing pamphlets inciting people to arson and rioting. Mr. Woods told the meeting, it was one explanation of a detention death that the Government would not get away with.
