  • Description

FROM AMERICA'S SPACE PROGRAMME COMES A NEW TOOL FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH - A BED FLOATING ON AIR. AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER MEDICAL CENTRE DR. ARTHUR J. MOSS IS MEASURING THE INFINITESIMAL VIBRATIONS OF THE BODY RESPONDING TO EACH BEST OF THE HEAR. AN OUTGROWTH OF SPACE RESEARCH, THE UNIQUE BED, FLOAT BED, FLOATING ON A CUSHION OF AIR ONE/THIRTY-SECOND OF AN INCH THICK, IS TOTALLY FREE FROM VIBRATIONS EXCEPT THOSE PRODUCED BY THE HEART ITSELF.

WITH THE COMPRESSED AIR JETS TURNED OFF, AND THE BED RESTING ON A NORMAL SURFACE, BUILDING AND TRAFFIC VIBRATIONS OBSCURE THE EFFECTS OF THE HEART BEAT. BUT WHEN THE BED FLOATS ON ITS AIR CUSHION, THE BODY'S REACTION TO EACH BEAT IS CLEARLY VISIBLE, EASILY RECORDED. NOW USED AS A SCREENING PROCEDURE FOR PILOTS AND ASTRONAUTS, THIS NEW TECHNIQUE EMPLOYED BY MEDICAL RESEARCHERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER MAY LEAD TO EARLY DETECTION OF HEART DISEASE.
