  • Description

Portugal would like the European Economic Community to start giving it economic and development assistance soon after it opens formal negotiations to join, its Foreign Minister Mr. Victor Machado told members of the European Commission in Brussels on Tuesday (25 April).

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Machado was in Brussels for talks on Portugal's proposed entry into the Community. He met European Commission Vice President Mr. Lorenzo Natali, who is responsible for enlargement of the Community, and later the President, Mr. Roy Jenkins. The Commission is shortly to publish its formal opinion on Portugal's application for membership.

Once that report is published it will be up to foreign ministers to decide whether to open negotiations with Lisbon. Mr. Machado said Portugal would need a fairly long post-entry transition period to adjust to membership.

Mr. Machado told the Commission that in return for assistance, his government was prepared to consider reshaping industrialisation plans to meet EEC demands, and to accept continued restriction on free movement of its workers to other parts of the Community after becoming a member.
