  • Description

DURING HIS TWO-DAY VISIT TO LAOS, MR. PAUL HASLUCK, THE AUSTRALIAN MINISTER FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, HAD DISCUSSIONS WITH THE LAOTIAN PRIME MINISTER, PRINCE SOUVANNA PHOUMA. THE TALKS, HELD IN VIENTIANE ON WEDNESDAY (DECEMBER 15), WERE CENTRED ON THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA. ALSO DISCUSSED WAS THE RECENT INVOLVEMENT OF NORTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS IN A FIERCE BATTLE AT THAKKEK, BETWEEN GOVERNMENT FORCES AND PRO-COMMUNIST PATHET LAO TROOPS.

PRESENT AT THE HOUR-LONG TALKS WAS MR. B. DEXTER, AUSTRALIAN AMBASSADOR TO LAOS. MR. HASLUCK IS CURRENTLY ON A TOUR OF SOUTH-EAST ASIAN COUNTRIES. HIS TOUR OF LAOS ENDED ON THURSDAY (DECEMBER 16) AND HE IS NOW IS SOUTH VIETNAM.

LATER, MR. HASLUCK WAS GUEST OF HONOUR AT A RECEPTION WHERE HE MET FOREIGN DIPLOMAS AND THEIR WIVES, AND MEMBERS OF THE LAOTIAN CABINET.

THEN CAME A RELIGIOUS CEREMONY CALLED THE BACI. IT WAS HELD AT THE RESIDENCE OF MR. NGON SANANIKONE, THE LAOTIAN MINISTER FOR PUBLIC WORKS AND NATIONAL ECONOMY. THE BACI IS CONSIDERED A GREAT BUDDHIST RELIGIOUS CEREMONY WHICH CLAIMS TO DRIVE AWAY EVIL SPIRITS FROM THE PARTICIPANTS AND PURIFIES THEIR SOULS UNTIL LIFE EVERLASTING, PRINCE PHOUMA WAS HOST.

BOTH MR. HASLUCK AND AMBASSADOR DEXTER TOOK OFF THEIR SHOES BEFORE SITTING CROSSED-LEGS ON THE FLOOR TO JOIN IN THE CEREMONY. A LAOTIAN MUSICAL BAND CONTINUOUSLY PLAYED RELIGIOUS HYMNS.... THE WOMEN HELPERS THEN WENT ABOUT FASTENING YELLOW STRIPS OF LORDS TO THE WRISTS OF MR. HASLUCK AND THE GUESTS. THE YELLOW LORDS ARE NOT TO BE TAKEN OFF THE WRISTS UNTIL THEY SHOW SIGNS OF WEAR AND TEAR.
