  • Description

The forcible marriages of young Indian and Persian girls to members of the Zanzibar Revolutionary government resulted in a demonstration by students at the Tanzanian High Commission in New Delhi Yesterday (Tuesday, 6 October).

The demonstration was organised by the right wing student group Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. The demonstrators carried placards attacking the marriages and shouted slogans demanding action be taken against the Zanzibar officials responsible.

A strong force of police surrounded the Tanzanian High Commission and kept the main body of the students from the building. A deputation representing the students was allowed to present a memorandum of officials of the High Commission. The memorandum spoke of the shock to the youth of India by the Zanzibar marriages, and warned that unless the Tanzanian government gave protection to Indians living in Tanzania, Indian youth would be forced to take "effective steps".

A Tanzanian official assured the demonstrators that forcible marriages had been stopped. After further shouting of slogans, the demonstrators dispersed without further incident.
