    HE TOLD REPORTERS THAT HE LIKED THE IDEA OF NEUTRALIZING BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH VIETNAM, BUT HE FELT THAT THE FRENCH PRESIDENT'S PLAN WAS AIMED PRIMARILY AT SOUTH VIETNAM.

    ON FRIDAY, (JANUARY 31), PRESIDENT DE GAULLE SAID THE THOUGHT THE SITUATION IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA MIGHT BE IMPROVED BY THE NEUTRALIZATION OF THE COMBAT BETWEEN THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE, HEAVILY SUPPORTED BY NORTH VIETNAM.

    PRESIDENT JOHNSON WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE PACE OF WARFARE AGAINST THE VIET CONG GUERRILLAS SHOULD BE STEPPED UP AND HE HAD COMMUNICATED THESE VIEWS TO THE LEADERS OF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT.
