  • Description

THE ISLAND OF SINGAPORE YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) CELEBRATED ITS THIRD NATIONAL DAY AS AN INDEPENDENT REPUBLIC. CLIMAX OF THE DAY WAS A PARADE BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMED SERVICES, POLICE, CULTURAL AND SPORTING ORGANISATIONS.

SINGAPORE SEPARATED FROM THE FEDERATION OF MALAYSIA IN NINETEEN-SIXTY-FIVE AND ELECTED TO MAKE ITS OWN WAY AS A NATION.

TORRENTIAL RAIN SWEPT THE CITY FOR THE CELEBRATIONS, BUT THE PARADE BY 25-THOUSAND YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN WENT ON AS PLANNED.

THOUSANDS OF DRENCHED SPECTATORS LINED THE STREETS OF THE CITY DURING THE TWO-HOUR PARADE, WHILE MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT SAT IN AN UNCOVERED AREA AT THE CITY HALL.

A DISPLAY BY STUDENTS FOLLOWED THE MARCH AND PROCESSION.
