On Dec 8 the Holy Father Pope Johannes XXIII paid homage to the Madonna of Immaculate Conception on the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. Visnews filmed the solemn ceremony which was watched by thousands. Earlier during the day members of a selected unit of the Rome Fire Brigade drove up in their fire-engines and the crowds watched fire-men climb a ladder to the statue at the summit of the high column. A wreath and a silver heart were placed on the outstretched arm of the statue while below, prayers were sung.
The Holy Father has expressed his desire to pay homage at all holy places in Rome, his visit to the statue of the Madonna was the fifth of these pilgrimages.
The monument, was erected by Pope Pius IX a century ago to solemnize the proclamation of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception. By tradition the Fire Brigade of Rome places a wreath on the statue's arm, a task considered to be a great honour for the chosen firemen.
