  • Description

The first delegation to the United Nations from the People's Republic of China has arrived in New York.

Some New York newspapers had levelled accusations of spying against the leader of the delegation's advance party, Kao Liang. Mr Kao later described the accusations as "entirely slanderous".

When the main delegation arrived on board their Air France jet there was a brief moment of confusion when officials were unable to open a door on a passenger gangway. The problem was solved when the door was torn from its fittings and the delegation were able to leave the aircraft.

SYNOPSIS: New York's Roosevelt Hotel, temporary home to the first delegation to the United Nations from the People's Republic of China. On Thursday the delegation's advance party, led by Kao Liang, left the hotel to greet their main United Nations delegation
Security precautions at the airport were at their peak for the arrival of the delegation on board their Air France jet aircraft.

The delegation was trapped in the aircraft for almost half an hour while airport officials worked to open a passenger gangway door. United Nations officials and diplomats from a number of countries which successfully brought about the admission of the People's Republic to the United Nations were on hand to greet the delegation. The Chief of United Nations Protocol, Sinan Korle, escorted the Chief of the People's Republic delegation to the waiting microphones.

After a brief speech which expressed his country's desire for peace and coexistence with all nations, the delegation was driven to their hotel.
