  • Description

Police and workers spent house clearing bodies and a few survivors from the wreckage of a Boeing-727 jet that crashed in New York on Tuesday (24 June) killing 109 people.

The Eastern Airlines plane hit the ground less than half a mile (one km) form Kennedy Airport, bounced and came to rest on a six-lane roadway. Police initially feared the aircraft had hit cars in the heavy afternoon rush-hour traffic but none were found.

After plunging to the ground, the aircraft struck a 30-foot tall (10 metres) light tower and then bounced across Rockaway Boulevard before bursting into flames. Sixteen people were initially reported to have survived the crash, but two of them were reported to have died later in hospital. The remaining fourteen were said to be in a critical condition.

Eyewitnesses of the crash said the plane disintegrated on impact and burned fiercaly for an hour. The largest intact portion of the plane was a 45-foot (14 metre) section of rear fuselage, which had flipped upside down on the roadway, the rear exit stairs dangling in the air.

Row after row of wire baskets, filled with white-shrouded bodies stood at the desolate outskirts of the airport in a makeshift morgue. Baggage - including bits of clothing and children's toys - was strewn all over the crash site which extended for nearly a quarter of a mile (400 metres).

A team of Federal investigators has been called into determine the cause of the crash. The jet crashed during a heavy thunderstorm and one of the causes being considered was that the plane was struck by lightning.
