Background: Republic Steel's big Cleveland mill is located on the Cuyahoga River, considered one of the most polluted in the world. The federal government has filed suit against a neighbouring steel firm, ordering it to stop polluting the Cuyahoga. "But, Republic has been planning and building for five years, and now has begun operation of an 18-million dollar water treatment plant. It serves two functions. It cleans-??? the dirty water the steel mill takes from the river, and it cleans-up the waste water the mill dumps back into the river.
In this settling basin, mill scale -- small particles of iron oxide -- are removed from the water. Six deep-bed filters are used to remove fine solids and traces of oil from waste water.Water from the mills is cooled in these 40-foot High cooling towers, and then re-cycled. This is the only water that the plant returns to the river. And according to company spokesmen, it meets all federal and state anti-pollution standards. The new water treatment plant can process enough water for a city with a population of half-a-million people.
