  • Description

Last preparations were being made at the Belgian Ambassador's Kalino residence and at the Belgian Embassy in Leopoldville, Aug 9, when Baron Jean van den Bosch finally decided to dissolve his Mission - nearly four weeks after the severance by the Congo Republic of its diplomatic relations with Belgium.

Congolese troops were sent in the morning to the Embassy with orders to ensure, by force if necessary, that he left by midday. A hostile crowd gathered outside and the Ambassador agreed to depart an hour after the noon deadline. Escorted by United Nations troops in a lorry, Baron Jean van den Bosch drove to the French Embassy, to leave later for Brazzaville on the other side of the Congo River.

Congolese Premier Lumumba arrived at the Belgian Embassy in the afternoon to give his personal confirmation of the closure of the Embassy and expulsion not only of the Ambassador but of all his staff.

France is to take over Belgian interests in Leopoldville. Reporters were told the Congolese Government was prepared to allow the Belgian Consulates-General in five provincial towns to remain for the moment. The other consulates are being closed.
