  • Description

ON JULY 29, 1967, A VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE SHOCK CARACAS, THE CAPITAL OF VENEZUELA, AND SURROUNDING AREAS ALONG THE VENEZUELAN COAST. AS A RESULT, MORE THAN 400 PEOPLE DIED AND TENS OF THOUSANDS WERE MADE HOMELESS. DAMAGE WAS ESTIMATED IN MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

A YEAR LATER, THE PEOPLE OF THE STRICKEN AREAS ARE STILL WORKING TO REBUILT - A HUGE TASK INVOLVING SCORES OF BUILDINGS, MANY OF THEM TOTALLY RUINED.

THE EARTHQUAKE STRUCK ONLY FOUR DAYS AFTER THE PEOPLE OF CARACAS HAD BEEN CELEBRATING THE FOURTH CENTENARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE CITY.

THE TREMORS CONTINUED FOR 90 SECONDS, TOPPLING TALL BUILDING LIKE SAND CASTLES AND FLATTERING POORLY BUILT HOUSES.

MANY OF THE VICTIMS WHO DIED IN THE DISASTER WERE OCCUPANTS OF MULTI-STOREY BUILDINGS WHO HAD LITTLE CHANCE OF ESCAPING THE FULL VIOLENCE OF THE EARTHQUAKE.

REBUILDING WORK IS PROCEEDING, ALTHOUGH IT IS FAR FROM COMPLETED. NEW BUILDINGS ARE GOING UP, OVERSHADOWING THE SHELLS OF OTHER BUILDINGS RAZED A YEAR AGO.
