• Short Summary

PRESIDENT KENYATTA OF KENYA HAS ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF HIS LEFT-WING VICE PRESIDENT, MR. OGINGA?

  • Description

MR. ODINGA SPEAKING (SOF) AT NEWS CONFERENCE.

"IT IS FAIRLY CLEAR THAT THERE IS PRESSURE AND DESIRE THAT I SHOULD LEAVE THE GOVERNMENT. THE AUTHORITY CONCERNED HAS, HOWEVER, SHOWED RELUCTANCE TO SAY SO OPENLY TO THE PUBLIC. IF I THOUGHT THAT THERE WAS THE SLIGHTESTS CHANCE OF PUTTING THINGS RIGHT FROM WITHIN THE GOVERNMENT, THEN THIS DESIRE TO REMOVE ME FROM OFFICE WOULD NOT HAVE WORRIED ME AS, ???. IT HAS NOT DONE FOR THE LAST ONE YEAR. HOWEVER, WANAINCHI, MY HONEST OPINION IS THAT THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT HAS REACHED THE POINT OF NO RETURN. IT CAN ONLY ??? THE PEOPLE THE LITTLE THAT THE UNDERGROUND ALLOWS IT TO DO. IT'S GUIDING STAR HAS BECOME PERSONNEL GAIN. I THEREFORE FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO BE PART OF IT, AND MY DECISION IS THAT FROM NOW ON I SHOULD BE FREE TO JOIN WITH WANAINCHI IN DEMANDING THAT THEIR VOICE BE HEARD."

Background: PRESIDENT KENYATTA OF KENYA HAS ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF HIS LEFT-WING VICE PRESIDENT, MR. OGINGA ODINGA, WHO ANNOUNCED HIS RESIGNATION (SOF) YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AT A NEWS CONFERENCE IN NAIROBI. MR. ODINGA SAID HE WAS ALSO LEAVING THE RULING KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION (JANU) - KENYA'S ONLY POLITICAL PARTY - BUT WOULD KEEP HIS SEAT IN PARLIAMENT.

MR. ODINGA BEGAN HIS STATEMENT TO THE PRESS BY CLAIMING THAT SINCE KENYA HAD WON ITS INDEPENDENCE, THE COLONIALIST "ENEMY" HAD GONE UNDERGROUND AND NOW AIMED AT ENSNARING THE NEW LEADERS OF KENYA BY EXPLODING THEIR WEAKEST POINTS. HE WENT ON...

(PRESIDENT KENYATTA'S OFFICE LATER ISSUED A STATEMENT WARNING AGAINST ATTEMPTS TO UNDERMINE THE GOVERNMENT'S AUTHORITY AND SAYING THE PUBLIC MUST ASK ITSELF WHETHER IT WAS THE GOVERNMENT OR MR. ODINGA WHO HAD "REACHED THE POINT OF NO RETURN".)
