Background: One heavy communist attack during the intermittent fighting in South Vietnam last
week, that punctuated South Vietnamese Political manoeuvres designed to find a leadership
acceptable enough to the communists to dissuade them from entering Saigon, the
capital, was on the town of Trang Bang - only 30 miles (50 kilometres) outside
the city.

Soldiers and civilians alike fled from the town on Friday (April 25) under
rocket and rifle fire, from an estimated three battalions of communist troops.

The previous evening South Vietnamese aircraft had bombed communist positions
around Trang Bang. At dawn on Friday, the communist forces attacked the
south-east edge of the town, and at mid-morning poured a barrage of rockets into
it - following up with rifle fire. Within an hour of the rocket attack the town
was almost deserted, with the remaining few civilians and soldiers huddled in
whatever cover they could find.
