Background: INTRODUCTION: Soccer ... and River Plate become the club champions of Argentina on Sunday (20 December) when they defeated Ferrocarril of Buenos Aires by one goal to nil. Many of Argentina's world-Cup-winning team competed.
SYNOPSIS: River Plate had won the first encounter between the two sides in the two-leg final by one-nil. On this occasion, Ferrocarril were the home side and wore the green (single colour shirts).
The nearest the home team came to scoring in the half was this attack, which ended with the crossbar being struck.
In the second half, River Plate, in the red and white, cleared this corner, and launched a dangerous attack down the right flank.
River Plate began to dominate. First, they hot the post, and from the ensuing scramble, Mario Kempes headed home. Kempes was the man who scored twice for Argentina in the 1978 World Cup Final against Holland.
Ferrocarril now had a two-goal deficit to make up, and they pressed forward in large numbers. But their forwards could not throw the River Plate defence off balance -- although this free kick only narrowly cleared the crossbar.
But it was the River Plate team and its supporters who had cause to celebrate at the end.
