Background: Spain's Transport and Communications Minister, Jose Llado is in West Africa trying to secure fishing rights for Spanish trawlers off Mauritanian shores. He arrived in Nouakchott, the Mauritanian capital, on Monday (24 October).
SYNOPSIS: Senor Llado's area of responsibility includes fisheries, and that was his business in Mauritania. Several Spanish trawlers have been sei???ed recently for illegally fishing in Mauritanian waters. The trawlers have been released, but the seizures have caused enough concern in Spain for the government to send a delegation headed by Senor Llada to sort the matter out with Mauritanian President Ould Daddah. During the visit, Senor Llada's party was to meet a Mauritanian delegation for working discussions on fishing rights. Meetings with the Mauritanian National Assembly, and the Ministries of Foreign affairs, and Industry and commerce, were also being included in the programme.
But Spanish fishing rights in Mauritanian territorial waters took priority in the discussions, which started originally in San Sebastian last August. It is hoped that this last series of talks will result in an agreement being signed between the two countries.
