    East Germany took a solid lead in both the men's and women's matches on the opening day of the two-day match with Britain at the White City Stadium in London on Friday (10 July).

    The East Germans-held substantial leads in both contests at the end of the first day--59-47 in the men's events and 39-27 in the women's.

    Highlight of the day was a magnificent victory by East German Gert Eisenberg in the 10,000 metres. Eisenberg took the lead in the final lap and won in 28 mins 27.0 seconds from Trevor Wright of Britain.

    Other results included a win for Helga Fischer in the women's 400 metres. The East German girl's time was 53.5 secs--second was team-mate Monica Zehrt and third place went to J.Champion of Britain.

    The women's 100 metres was won in 11.5 secs by East German Renate Meissner, with British girls Valerie Peat and Anita Neil in second and third places.

    British runner David Hemery ran the 110 metres hurdles in 14 secs to win from team-mate Alan Pascoe and H. Uber from East Germany.
