  • Description

Dahomey celebrated the 10th Anniversary of its Independence in Contonou on August the first with military and civilian parades lasting more than two hours.

The traditional military march-past took place this year on the Marina front of the Republican Palace, where the three-members of Dahomey's Presidential Commission. President Hubert Maga, Just in Ahomadegbe and Soruu Migan Apithy, took the salute.

Also joining in the Independence celebrations were four visiting Chiefs of State of the Conseil de L'Entente who were taking part in a two-day meeting in Cotonou. General Lamizana of Upper Volta, M. Diory Hamani of Niger, M. Felix Houphouet. Boigny of the Ivory Coast, and Togo's Chief of State General Etienne Eyadema, all participated in the festival before leaving for their respective countries.

Visitors from Europe included French Foreign Secretary M. Yvon Bourges, and the French Secretary for African and Malagasy Affairs, M. Jacquas Foccart.

The matathom parade involved a wide range of military forces including commandos, pioneer troops, women's services and motorised units.

Dehomey gained its independence from France on August 1 1960. This was the first Independence day under the new three-man Presidential Commission, which came to power in May.
