  • Description

The Angola military junta has warned it might use force to disperse demonstrators who defy a curfew imposed in the capital, Luanda.

The warning follows a demonstration on Monday night (5 August) when hundreds of whites defied the curfew to drive through the streets of the Angolan capital honking horns and shouting slogans against the Army and two African nationalist movements.

The demonstration came within 48 hours of the Portuguese Government's announcement in Lisbon that it was ready to reach immediate agreement on transferring power in Guinea-Bissau and negotiate on a handover with the liberation movements in Angola and Mozambique.

The white demonstrators voiced support for the Angolan police, replaced by the military in maintaining security in the suburbs, where recent clashes between rival factions resulted in three deaths.

Convoys of cars, trucks and motorcycles three and four abreast carried the demonstrators, mainly young men, through city streets up to midnight on Monday. The armed forces made no move to intervene in Luanda's first all-white demonstration of its kind.

The protest underlined growing dissatisfaction ont eh part of the whites with the proposed new deal for Angola's political future, and indicated a widening gulf between the territory's Africans and whites.

The night demonstration was followed by a similar protest on the following morning Tuesday (6 August). Although the military junta ordered troops into the capital, no serious incidents were reported
