  • Description

In pouring rain the VC10 of the BOAS fleet which brought Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith back to Salisbury after his talks in London with British Government landed at the airport. For ??? before the plane was due to arrive crowds were beginning to arrive to greet him and by the time that the Plane landed the crowd was estimated at least four thousand. Noticeable amongst the absentees were the Africans - very few had arrived to greet their prime minister. As the plane touched down the crowds cheered and sang 'for he's a jolly good'. As the rain lashed down Mrs. Smith went out to the plane to greet her husband and it wasn't long before the prime minister and his party were rushed into the VIP lounge and then he faced a press conference. The largest number of international press ever to assemble in Salisbury were gathered in the large room set aside for the purpose. He opened the conference by stating that he would not make this a full scale press conference but it would hold one in the course of the next couple of days after he had conferred with his cabinet. Questions that were asked had been asked a thousand times over the past few days and there was nothing fresh came out of the conference. Outside the airport the crowds had regathered and Smith once more had a rousing send of home.
