Background: BRITISH ATHLETES OUT-PACED OVERSEAS ENTRANTS IN THE MAIN EVENTS AT THE 1965 BRITISH GAMES HELD IN LONDON TODAY (MONDAY). ALAN SIMPSON SET A NEW BRITISH ONE-MILE RECORD, WHILE DEREK GRAHAM JUST BEAT THE BELGIAN RUNNER, EUGENE ALLONSIUS IN THE TWO-MILE RACE. THE INTERNATIONAL 440-YARDS HURDLES WAS WON BY ROBERTO FRINOLLO, OF ITALY.

FRINOLLI'S TIME IN THE 440 YARDS HURDLE EVENT WAS 51.3 SECONDS. HE BEAT TWO CHAMPION BRITISH HURDLES, P. WARDEN AND J. COOPER INTO SECOND AND THIRD PLACES RESPECTIVELY.

DEREK GRAHAM OF NORTHERN IRELAND, FIRST, AND EUGENE ALLONSIUS, SECOND, SHARED A TIME OF 8 MINUTES, 33.8 SECONDS IN THE TWO-MILE EVENT. GRAHAM WAS BADLY SPIKED IN THE FIRST FEW STRIDES AND RAN THE COURSE WITH THE WOUND BLEEDING FREELY. BUT HE WAS NEVER OUT OF THE FIRST THREE, AND A LAP FROM HOME HE INCREASED HIS PACE TO BEAT THE BELGIAN RUNNER IN A CLASSIC FINISH. THE TIME WAS A NEW BRITISH RECORD. THE FORMER RECORD,HELD BY BRUCE TULLOH, WAS 8 MINUTES, 34 SECONDS. THIRD IN THE TWO MILES WAS L. MECSER HUNGARY.

IN THE MILE EVENT ALAN SIMPSON OF BRITAIN, WHO WAS FOURTH IN THE OLYMPIC 1500 METRES, CLOCKED 3 MINUTES 56.6 SECONDS TO SET A NEW BRITISH RECORD. ANOTHER BRITON, ANDY GREEN WAS SECOND. SIMPSON IS BRITAIN'S 12TH SUB FOUR-MINUTE MILER, AND THE NEW RECORD BEATS THE EIGHT-YEAR-OLD ONE SET BY DEREK IBBOTSON IN 1957.
