  • Description

IN DAR-ES-SALAAM, TANZANIA, WORKERS IN A SMALL RUBBER FACTORY ARE ASSEMBLING A VEHICLE THEY HOPE WILL BRING A SMALL REVOLUTION IN ROAD, RAIL, SEA AND AIR FREIGHTING THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. IT IS A COMPLETELY NEW IDEA IN COLLAPSIBLE CONTAINERS WHICH HAS ALREADY SECURED A BRITISH PATENT AND CONSIDERABLE INTEREST OVERSEAS.

THE IDEA FOR THE INVENTION CAME FROM THE ZAMBIAN ROADLIFT - THE MASSIVE TRANSPORT OPERATION DIVERTING LAND-LOCKED ZAMBIA'S TRADE THROUGH DAR-ES-SALAAM AFAR RHODESIA SEIZED INDEPENDENCE THREE YEARS AGO. EARLY IN THE ROADLIFT, FLEETS OF OIL TANKERS WERE TRAVELLING BACK EMPTY FROM THEIR TRIPS DOWN 1.200-MILE (1.900-K.M.) GREAT NORTH ROAD.

AN IRANIAN ENGINEER, MR. R. YAZDANI, CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF BUILDING A RUBBER CONTAINER FOR LIQUID OR POWERED FREIGHT, WHICH WOULD FOLD FLAT TO CARRY A REGULAR LOAD OF SOLID GOODS. THE CONTAINER IS INSIDE A STEEL BOX, WITH STEEL COVERINGS AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM. AS LIQUID CARGO IS PUMPEDIN, THE TOP OF THE CONTAINER RISES - WHEN IT HAS BEEN EMPTIED OF LIQUID, THE COLLAPSED TANKS UP ONLY SIX INCHES (15 CMS.) OF CONTAINER DEPTH.

THE PROTOTYPE TRUCK, SPONSORED BY THE ZAMBIA-TANZANIA ROAD SERVICES CORPORATION, IS SHORTLY TO START EXTENSIVE TESTS.
